June Malta is properly summer — bright, warm, and built around the sea.

Climate normals put June at about 28.8°C by day and 19.6°C at night, with roughly 11.2 hours of bright sunshine a day and only about 7.3 mm of rain across the month.

The useful version: this is swimming weather. Build in water, shade and slow lunches; do exposed walks early or later in the day, and let the hottest part of the afternoon be the bit where nobody has to prove anything.

A few rules for this guide

GF options are flagged, but coeliac-safe prep should always be checked directly.
With Daniel
The good days give Daniel room to move, not six museums in a row.
June
Swimming and long evenings are properly in play; exposed outdoor stops are nicer outside the hottest part of the day.

Five tiny honeymoon moments worth quietly engineering

Not “romantic activities”. Just the sort of small Malta moments that become the bits you remember afterwards.

Dingli lightCatch the western sky if the weather behaves.
One lovely dinnerBook somewhere you can linger.
Good coffee, no rushSit down somewhere tiny and stay awhile.
A useful summer habit

Malta does not have a blanket one-hour midday shutdown now, but the instinct behind the old summer rhythm still makes sense. Official health advice is to avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, roughly 11:00–16:00. With Daniel, make that the long-lunch / shade / air-conditioned-stop window and save exposed walks for earlier or later. Official heat guidance ↗

On the off chance…

If your dates catch 28–29 June, keep an eye out for L‑Imnarja, one of Malta’s oldest annual celebrations. The main festivities traditionally gather around Buskett with local food, folk music, produce, animals and family activity; the 2027 programme will be published closer to the time. If you miss it this time, you can always go next time.

What is Malta?

A very small place with a very big history

Malta is a tiny Mediterranean archipelago between Sicily and North Africa with more than 7,000 years of history. Its position in the middle of the Mediterranean made it strategically important for centuries: Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, the Knights of St John, the French and the British all left layers behind, while its prehistoric temples are among the oldest free-standing stone structures in the world. Valletta, the fortified cities and those enormous harbours make more sense once you realise Malta has spent much of its history sitting exactly where larger powers wanted to be.

The Maltese

The Maltese are used to visitors, and English is an official language alongside Maltese, so communicating is usually easy. Expect conversation to be warm, expressive and often direct; hospitality is a real part of the culture, and you will hear Maltese and English around you constantly. A little effort goes a long way: say bonġu, say grazzi, ask questions, and try mela once you have heard how locals use it. Nobody needs you to sound Maltese — joining in is the point.

A tiny phrasebook

Try a little Malti

Pronunciations are deliberately approximate for English speakers.

MelaMEH-laThe great Maltese everything-word: “so”, “well”, “right”, “of course”, “okay then”… or simply what you say when you need a word.
BonġuBON-jooHello / good morning.
GrazziGRAT-seeThank you.
Jekk jogħġbokyek YOJ-bokPlease.
Skużaniskoo-ZAA-neeExcuse me / sorry.
Kif inti?keef IN-teeHow are you?
Saħħa!SAH-haBye — and sometimes “cheers”.
Uwejja!oo-WAY-yaCome on! / No way! / You’re joking! Tone does most of the work.

One useful clue: ġ sounds like the j in “jam”, x is usually “sh”, and ħ is a strong, breathy h. English will get you through the trip; these are just for the pleasure of meeting Malta halfway.

Nothing matches all of those. Drop a filter or two — you only have a week, so keep it easy.

Places worth opening

The “Katie’s shortlist” marker is the personal layer. Everything else was added because it suits a first Malta trip, a honeymoon, Daniel, June, or the gluten-free requirement. Opening times use the latest published information available in September 2026; summer 2027 seasonal schedules should be rechecked before travel.

01
Why it made the list

Go downstairs. That is the important bit. This place originally made the list because of a mushroom burger years ago; the burger has gone, but the stone vaults and ridiculous whisky selection have not.

June

Excellent June evening choice: cool stone vaults, no midday sun, and a proper place to linger over dinner or whisky.

With Daniel

Fine with Daniel, but this is primarily an adult food-and-drink recommendation.

Useful to know

Gluten-free options are advertised, but the current menu does not give detailed allergen labelling. If the gluten-free requirement is coeliac-level, ask the restaurant directly about preparation and cross-contamination.

Opening times

Terrace daily 12:00–23:00 · Bistro/bar Sun–Thu 17:00–00:00, Fri–Sat 13:00–00:00 · Kitchen to 23:00.

Why it made the list

This is the restaurant that feels a bit like dining inside Valletta's stonework and then stepping out onto the harbour.

June

Best in June as a later lunch or evening meal, when the harbour light softens and the terrace earns its keep.

With Daniel

Family workable; worth booking and mentioning Daniel when you do.

Useful to know

The restaurant explicitly invites diners to ask about gluten-free options. Still flag coeliac requirements when booking.

Opening times

Mon–Sat · lunch 12:00–14:00 · dinner 18:30–21:45 (last food order) · Sun closed.

Why it made the list

This is less a “tourist attraction” and more a very Malta way to spend a couple of hours together: bastions, harbour, boat, old streets.

June

Very good in June — aim for morning or late afternoon rather than the fiercest midday heat. The summer ferry runs much later into the evening.

With Daniel

A ferry ride breaks up the history nicely for Daniel.

Useful to know

The Valletta–Three Cities ferry switches to its summer timetable from 1 June and runs well into the night. Check the live service before setting out.

Opening times

Summer ferry: frequent daytime service, with late departures to about 01:30. Barrakka lift keeps late hours; check live timetable.

Why it made the list

Not everything on a honeymoon needs to be romantic. Some things are just astonishing, and this is one of them.

June

One of the smartest midday stops in June: spectacular, indoors, and out of the direct sun.

With Daniel

Depends on Daniel’s tolerance for churches; better as one focused stop than a museum marathon.

Useful to know

Keep the visit compact if Daniel is running out of patience; pair it with gardens, coffee or the ferry rather than turning the whole day into interiors.

Opening times

Mon–Sat 09:00–16:45 · last entry 16:00 · Sun/public holidays closed.

Why it made the list

If Valletta feels grand, Birgu feels intimate. It is a very good place to wander without trying to “complete” anything.

June

Lovely in June, especially morning or later afternoon. Waterfront shade and the ferry help keep it from feeling like a long hot walk.

With Daniel

Plenty of visual interest and open space compared with a sequence of indoor museums.

Useful to know

Fort St Angelo is a strong optional centrepiece, but Birgu itself is worth the ferry even if you simply walk the waterfront and old streets.

Opening times

Fort St Angelo: daily 09:00–17:00 · last entry 16:30. Birgu streets/waterfront: open access.

Why it made the list

The coffee. Seriously. One of those tiny places that sticks in the memory because the coffee was just that good.

June

A perfect June pause: coffee, shade and stone streets. Go earlier if Mdina is getting busy and hot.

With Daniel

Easy, low-pressure stop while exploring Mdina.

Useful to know

Current listings identify gluten-free options. As always, distinguish “GF options” from coeliac-safe preparation if that matters.

Opening times

Mon–Sat 10:00–18:00 · Sundays can vary, so check before making a special trip.

Why it made the list

Do not just go through Mdina Gate, take photos and leave. Drop down into Il-Foss. You get the walls from below and Daniel gets room to explore.

June

Good in June outside the hottest middle of the day. There is some welcome greenery, but treat shade and water as part of the plan.

With Daniel

One of the easiest historical places to make enjoyable for Daniel.

Useful to know

Free-form wandering rather than a timed attraction. Good place to decompress.

Opening times

Daily about 08:00–20:00.

Why it made the list

No itinerary required. This one is simply: do not rush out before the lights come on.

June

Arguably better in June: stay for the long evening, let the heat ease off, then watch the city change after sunset.

With Daniel

Works beautifully as the last part of a Mdina afternoon; June sunset is late, so this becomes a proper evening rather than an early-afternoon finish.

Useful to know

June darkness comes much later, so this is an evening choice rather than an easy late-afternoon one. Let the day breathe instead of forcing it.

Opening times

Mdina streets and gates are open access at all hours; individual attractions keep their own times.

Why it made the list

This is not here for nostalgia - it is here because it fits the two of you: old stone, evening Mdina and gluten-free options.

June

A natural June evening choice after the heat has dropped and Mdina starts to feel quieter.

With Daniel

Check the restaurant’s current arrangements for Daniel when booking.

Useful to know

Current listings identify gluten-free options. Book ahead and state dietary requirements clearly.

Opening times

Mon–Sat 12:00–16:00 & 18:00–22:00 · Sun 18:00–22:00.

Why it made the list

If Daniel is old enough to think underground passages are cool rather than terrifying, this can be a much better sell than another church.

June

An unusually useful hot-day history stop: much of the experience is underground and feels like a genuine change of temperature and pace.

With Daniel

Could be brilliant or a hard no depending on what Daniel enjoys.

Useful to know

Easy to combine with Mdina/Rabat without making it the purpose of the whole day. Summer opening can differ from winter, so use the Heritage Malta link before setting out.

Opening times

Open in June; latest Heritage Malta hours can vary by season/event. Check the live site for that day’s last entry.

Why it made the list

Keep this one in your back pocket for the hottest part of a day, not just bad weather.

June

Still useful in June — not because rain is likely, but because sometimes everyone needs a cool indoor couple of hours.

With Daniel

Very strong family choice.

Useful to know

Very close to your St Paul’s Bay base, easy to use as a wet-weather fallback without sacrificing a whole day.

Opening times

Daily 10:00–18:00 · last entry 17:30.

Why it made the list

Absolutely send them. It is one of those family attractions where the adults still get a real place and a ridiculous view rather than just soft play.

June

June turns Popeye Village into the full summer version, with water activities and long outdoor hours.

With Daniel

One of the strongest picks for Daniel in the guide.

Useful to know

The latest published high-season pattern runs from 1 June to 30 September, with water inflatables, a floating sun deck, splash pools, mini-golf and live shows. Recheck the 2027 package before travel.

Opening times

2027 hours TBC. Latest high-season pattern: daily 09:30–18:00.

Why it made the list

The season change genuinely changes this recommendation. It is close enough to the St Paul’s Bay base to be easy, and it gives Daniel a day where the activity is unapologetically for him.

June

Exactly the right season. The latest published season opens from mid-May; June moves from low season into high season around the third week.

With Daniel

One of the clearest Daniel-first choices. Check height/ride rules for anything specific he wants to use.

Useful to know

The 2027 calendar is not published yet. The 2026 pattern was 10:00–18:00 through 19 June, then 09:30–20:00 from 20 June. Outside food is restricted except baby food and sealed water.

Opening times

2027 schedule TBC · latest June pattern: 10:00–18:00 early June, 09:30–20:00 from around 20 June.

Why it made the list

Now the weather has changed, this stops being “coast as scenery first” and becomes somewhere they can genuinely build a beach afternoon around.

June

This is now a proper beach-and-swim recommendation, not just a scenic coast stop. Late afternoon into sunset is the sweet spot.

With Daniel

Sand and swimming make this an easy family option; keep an eye on flags and sea conditions.

Useful to know

Għajn Tuffieħa involves steps and can feel wilder; Golden Bay is easier. Respect warning flags and never treat calm-looking Mediterranean water as automatically safe.

Opening times

Open access. Go in daylight; facilities and lifeguard coverage are seasonal.

Why it made the list

This is the pool that took some digging to track down. In summer it becomes a genuinely handy local option rather than a speculative winter extra.

June

Much more relevant in June: treat it as a genuinely useful local outdoor-swim option, subject to the club’s 2027 public-access timetable.

With Daniel

Potentially very handy with Daniel because it is close to the St Paul’s Bay base.

Useful to know

Public access can still vary around club activity and water-polo use. Check Sirens/Finz before walking over with towels.

Opening times

Summer public timetable for June 2027 not yet published · check Sirens/Finz before going.

Why it made the list

Go for the view, not because there is a huge list of things to “do”. That is the point.

June

June makes sunset the obvious time. Avoid turning a dramatic cliff walk into a midday heat endurance test.

With Daniel

Good if supervised closely; the attraction is the landscape.

Useful to know

Stay sensible around cliff edges, especially with Daniel. In June, take water and aim for later in the day rather than exposed midday heat.

Opening times

Cliffs are open access. For summer, late afternoon/sunset is the sensible window.

Why it made the list

This is not here because it is “Malta heritage”. It is here because a honeymoon with Daniel still needs days where Daniel gets a win — and air-conditioning is useful in June.

June

Excellent as a deliberate cool-down afternoon, not just a bad-weather fallback.

With Daniel

Built for families, with dedicated facilities for younger visitors and parents.

Useful to know

No need to reserve it only for bad weather. In June, this is a very sensible midday/afternoon option between more outdoor plans.

Opening times

Mon–Fri 09:00–15:00 · Sat/Sun/public holidays 10:00–17:00.

Why it made the list

Very touristy. A bit of a family cash-grab. Still: they deserve to know it exists, because it may be exactly what saves everyone’s mood one afternoon.

June

Still useful in June because the indoor/outdoor mix gives Daniel a break from sightseeing — and gives everyone a fallback during the hottest hours.

With Daniel

Entirely the point.

Useful to know

Admission is currently inexpensive compared with many attractions; recheck prices before travel. The indoor/outdoor split makes more sense in June than it did in winter.

Opening times

Mon–Thu 10:00–16:00 · Fri–Sun/public holidays 10:00–18:00.

Why it made the list

This is deliberately optional. They only have a week. If the idea of another island sounds exciting, do it; if it sounds like logistics, Malta itself has plenty.

June

June makes Gozo very tempting: long daylight, easy coast stops and proper swimming weather. Keep the day loose rather than trying to “do Gozo”.

With Daniel

The ferry itself adds novelty; keep the Gozo plan loose.

Useful to know

The vehicle ferry crossing is about 25 minutes. June gives them enough daylight to add a swim or coast stop without making the whole day frantic.

Opening times

Gozo Channel runs 24 hours, all year · sailings vary by day; crossing is about 25 mins.

Useful reality checks

The bits that stop a good recommendation becoming a hot, over-planned June detour.

02

Splash & Fun is back on the table

The water park normally runs through June, and the latest published calendar makes it a proper family day rather than something to ignore. Recheck the 2027 dates before travel.

Popeye Village: do the summer version

June normally brings the full high-season package: the film set plus water inflatables, floating sun deck, splash pools, mini-golf and live entertainment.

Swimming is now a plan, not a bonus

Golden Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa, Sirens/Finz and whichever bay looks good that day can all be treated as real options. Still respect flags, currents and local advice.

Heat is the weather problem now

Use St John’s, the Catacombs, Aquarium, Esplora, long lunches and shady coffee stops for the hottest hours. Save cliffs, bastions and exposed walks for mornings or later afternoons.

A few opinions, because this is not TripAdvisor

These are deliberately personal calls rather than universal truths.

03

Mdina deserves time, not a tick

Wander, drink coffee, go down into Il-Foss, let dusk happen. It is better as a mood than as a checklist.

A car gives you freedom, not an obligation

Use it for Popeye Village, Dingli, coast stops and maybe Gozo. You do not need to turn a one-week honeymoon into a mission to “cover the island”.

Official sites, live timetables and reference material worth keeping handy. Opening hours and seasonal programmes can change, so these are here permanently rather than as a one-off “checked” list.

Gluten-free note: restaurant menus and kitchen practices can change. If the gluten-free requirement is medical or coeliac-level, confirm preparation and cross-contamination directly with the restaurant.
